This tour is all about visiting orphaned chimpanzees in DR Congo which is located a few kilometers from Kahuzi-Biega national park and Bukavu Town. The sanctuary currently protects over 80 chimpanzees, 106 distinct species of monkeys, tortoises, parrots and other primates. The experience will be visiting the sanctuary and spend the whole day performing daily activities at this site such as feeding, treating sick primates, and so much more.
The tour will begin and end in Kigali Rwanda which is known as the land of a thousand hills hence offering great scenic views along the drive.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu Town in D.R. Congo from Kigali, Rwanda.
Be picked from any agreed point in Kigali city, either hotel or Kigali International Airport and transfer to Bukavu town in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, after a short briefing about the whole tour by an expert safari guide.
The overall journey including the time spent on the border crossing will be about 8 hours but very amazing and rewarding, with incredible scenic views of unique hills, untouched green vegetation, clean environment, beautiful people, farmlands and more. Arrive in the evening and transfer to the hotel and this will mark the end of your first day.
Day 2: Visit Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary (full day)
Be served with breakfast and then take a drive which will last for an hour or 45 minutes to Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Attend a briefing on arrival which will be conducted by an expert guide and this will include the dos and don’ts to follow, general knowledge about the sanctuary like when it started, management and challenges it faces.
From here, walk through different trails as you learn and discover the best primates in captivity. Take part in feeding the chimpanzees, treating them and taking care of them. You can opt to donate to this sanctuary financially and the funds are used to feed these primates in captivity. After this experience in the evening, head back to the hotel for your night stay.
Day 3: Head back to Kigali Rwanda and depart.
Be served with breakfast and depending on your next program, head back to Kigali for your flight home or next destination. The tour will end after a drop-off at the agreed point in Kigali city.
